Just as a reminder…

This is the last week for students to check out books. All library books are due back by Friday, May 17. When inventory is finished, I will send reminder notes home with students who have missing books.

As the school year winds down, we are completing projects.

PreK students continue with the Daddy Goose unit. This week the students heard “Humpty Dumpty.”

Kindergarten students started the week with a review of Safety on the School Bus. They also spent time exploring their favorite pages on World Book Early World of Learning. On Thursday, we continued our Beatrix Potter unit with a very long story, “The Tailor of Gloucester.” We talked about how this story is similar to The Elves and the Shoemaker.

1st Grade students also continued their Beatrix Potter unit, listening to “The Story of Miss Moppet.”

2nd Grade students listened to the next chapter of Chocolate Fever. Poor Henry had to face a group of bullies in a school yard. Luckily, his quick wit saved him from any danger.

3rd Grade students listened to the conclusion of “The King’s Daughter Cries for the Moon.” They spent time describing characters and predicting what would happen by the end of the story.

4th Grade students presented their oral reports regarding states. Some students found that there were corrections they need to make for things like missing words, incomplete sentences, etc. We will work on corrections and final print outs between now and the end of the school year.

5th Grade students presented their oral reports about countries. They will finish the year by creating group PowerPoint presentations.

The end of the school year will be here before we know it. The last week to check out books at the elementary school is the week of May 6. All books need to be returned the week of May 13 so that inventory can be completed before the end of the school year.

PreK students listened to “Hickory, Dickory, Dock” from The Daddy Goose Treasury.

Kindergarten and 1st grade students are listening to stories by my favorite author/illustrator, Beatrix Potter. Kindergarten students heard “The Tale of Peter Rabbit.” First grade students heard “The Tale of Jemima Puddle-duck.”

2nd grade students continue listening to Chocolate Fever and practicing their keyboarding skills.

3rd grade students have finished listening to The 13 Clocks by James Thurber, and we are beginning The Little Bookroom, a collection of short stories. Students are also practicing their keyboarding skills.

4th and 5th grade students are finishing up their newsletter projects. All newsletters will be printed next week, and the following two weeks will be oral presentations.

PreK students listened to “Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary” from The Daddy Goose Treasury.

Kindergarten students listened to Farming and Cock-a-doodle-doo! Barnyard Hullabaloo. We discussed what farmers to, and we discussed poetry.

1st Grade students continued with the author/illustrator unit by listening to Billy and Blaze by C.W. Anderson. While looking for ideas for this unit, I read that there was a movie version of Billy and Blaze realeased in 2012. I haven’t found the movie yet. Have you seen it?

2nd Grade students continue listening to Chocolate Feverby Robert Kimmel Smith. Poor Henry Green is now breaking out in chocolate chunks! Students also continue to practice their keyboarding skills using Bernie’s Typing Travels.

3rd Grade students have been listening to The 13 Clocks by James Thurber. They have also been practicing their keyboarding skills.

4th Grade students have been writing their newsletter articles. Next week we will begin entering those articles on the computers.

5th Grade students are making great progress with their newsletters. Some groups have learned how to save images from the Internet and insert them in their newsletters. As groups finish, they are helping other students understand how to insert pictures.

This week, PreK students heard another story from The Daddy Goose Treasury, “Jack and Jill.”

Kindergarten students listened to stories about plants, The Magic School Bus Plants Seedsand In Enzo’s Splendid Gardens. The also explored plants on World Book Early World of Learning.

1st grade students have been introduced to author/illustrator Patricia Polacco. They listened to In Enzo’s Splendid Gardensand then checked out a book by Ms. Polacco.

2nd grade students continued to listen to Chocolate Fever. This week, Henry Green had chocolate spots appear on his arms and face!

3rd grade students practiced their keyboarding skills using Bernie’s Typing Travels. We resumed reading The 13 Clocks by James Thurber, which we started reading before Christmas.

4th grade students are writing articles for the state newsletters. We should be able to start entering information next week.

5th grade students have been working on their group newsletters about countries. It’s wonderful to see how much they remember about the process from last year!

I hope everyone enjoyed their spring break!

PreK students continue to listen to stories fromThe Daddy Goose Treasure, stories based on nursery rhymes. This week’s story was “Old King Cole.”

Kindergarten students listened to Everybody Needs a Rock.

1st grade students listened to If You are a Hunter of Fossils. We looked at an app on the iPad that shows how scientists believe the Earth evolved over the years. After checking out books, students used another app to see what scientists believe various dinosaurs looked like.

2nd grade students are listening to Chocolate Feverby Robert Kimmel Smith. They continue to practice their keyboarding skills using Bernie’s Typing Travels.

3rd grade students have been learning a little about geography, and have learned where to find books in the library about oceans, seas, continents, and countries.

4th grade students practiced searching for articles on World Book Kidsand World Book Students. They have printed articles and are ready to begin research on states in preparation for their individual newsletters.

5th grade students have set up their group newsletters and are beginning to write articles about the countries they are studying. They will type those articles next week.

Can it really be time for spring break already? My goodness, how time flies!

PreK students listened to another story from The Daddy Goose Treasury this week, “Round and Round the Garden.”

Kindergarten and 1st grade students listened to The Magic School Bus Inside the Human Body. They then explored “My Body” in World Book Early World of Learning.

2nd grade students have been introduced to novels, or chapter books. We will be reading Chocolate Feverby Robert Kimmel Smith. Don’t be surprised if your child comes home craving chocolate!

3rd grade students finished typing their essays about the books they read from the 900s section of the library.

4th and 5th grade students finished typing their essays about school.

All 2nd through 5th grade students will continue practicing keyboarding skills using Bernie’s Typing Travels through the end of the school year.

PreK students have started listening to Daddy Goose stories… the story behind the nursery rhyme. The Daddy Goose Treasury is a book I purchased several years ago, and the kids really seem to enjoy it. So, if they come home reciting nursery rhymes, you’ll know why!

Kindergarten students listened to Stone Soup this week as part of our folk and fairy tale unit.

Kindergarten and 1st grade students listened to the story Awesome Air, and then visited World Book Early World of Learning to explore information about weather.

2nd grade students continue to practice their keyboarding skills using Bernie’s Typing Travels. Mrs. Denny’s class listened to a tall tale about Davy Crockett, and Mrs. Dumas’s class listened to part of Anne of Green Gables.

3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students are working hard to finish up their essays. They are learning to proofread, correct their mistakes, and print final copies. They are also practicing their keyboarding skills.

With the recent email and school web sit outage, library/computer classes had to go through some last minute adjustments. Luckily, the library has enough resources to make spur-of-the-moment changes!

PreK students were introduced to the nonfiction section this week. We read the book Gentle Manatees.

Kindergarten students continued with the gingerbread theme. First, students watched and listened to the story of the gingerbread man on my iPad. I think the students really enjoyed this experience! Next, the listened to the story Marsupial Sue Presents The Runaway Pancake.This story is told and sung by actor John Lithgow, and it is one of my favorite books!

1st Grade students were introduced to the Dewey Decimal System and the 500s section of the library, natural science. Students were encouraed to check out a book from this section.

2nd Grade students continued practicing their keyboarding skills using Bernie’s Typing Travels.

3rd Grade students set up word processing documents and saved them to their hard drives. They then learned how to open their saved files, and began typing their essays about the history/geography books they read.

4th and 5th Grade students practiced their keyboarding skills using Bernie’s Typing Travels. After finishing their essays about their families, they were given time to check out books and read.

It’s been a busy week in the library!

PreK students listened to The Gingerbread Girl, continuing our unit on books that follow a theme.

Kindergarten and 1st grade students are learning about the different books in the nonfiction section. This week we read about frogs.

2nd through 5th grade students are continuing to practice their keyboarding skills using Bernie’s Typing Travels.

3rd grade students are reading books from the 900s, history and geography. Next week they will give book talks about the books they have read, and they will write book reviews.

4th and 5th grade students are writing essays about their families. These essays will be used to reinforce formatting skills on the computer.

PreK students listened to The Gingerbread Boyby Paul Galdone. This is a variation of the story we listened to last week, Marsupial Sue Presents The Runaway Pancake. Next week, we will listen to another variation, The Gingerbread Girl. We will be discussing how the stories are the same and how they are different.

Kindergarten and 1st grade students are learning about the nonfiction section of the library. This week we read Sea Sponges. Our follow-up activity was to access World Book Early World of Learning through the school web site. Students are learning to navigate the web site to find the information they want. This week we explored “Under the Sea.” If you have the login and password, you can access this site from home and what information is available to your child.

Second and third grade students presented nonfiction book talks. This can be a stressful experience for some students. Getting up in front of classmates takes a lot of courage! Everyone did a terrific job! Third grade students also created posters to advertise the nonfiction books they read.

Fourth and fifth grade students continue to work on essays, providing them practice with keyboarding skills, formatting, and saving. These skills will be very important to them as they continue their educations.
